This Head of Research and Development job opportunity is a new role within the company, and part of their strategic development plans to lead the domestic and international brand communications and visual identity market.

The Head of Research & Development jobs responsibilities

The head of research and development jobs responsibilities will require you to work with all departments within the business, as well as external partners and clients.

Ultimately the role sits between the Sales and Marketing team and Operations, and reports into the Group Sales & Marketing Director with close liaison also with the Operations Director.

Brief overview of job responsibilities include:

Liaise with the sales team to understand their clients needs, wants & desires
Establish customer & internal pain points regarding product & services, & investigate solutions
Liaise with suppliers to understand their own current & future product development projects
Work with suppliers on innovation & developing new products identified by the sales teams client needs
Visit trade shows & events to identify potential new products, services & suppliers
Research market for costs & pricing of new products / services
Liaise with production & operations, co-ordinating the testing of new products

You

To be considered for this Head of Research and Development job you’ll need experience of working within the sign and graphic’s industry and have well rounded knowledge of materials, finishes and products.

In addition, you will also need the following:

The ability to manage across Group Departmental boundaries
Confidence to work with internal & external teams to develop solutions that increase customer experience & market penetration
Inquisitive, innovative & a passion for problem solving
Understanding of pricing existing products & services, & the ability to devise pricing for new ones
Excellent attention to detail
Sound written & verbal communication skills
Highly organised, with good time management skills
Self motivated, flexible & driven
Full UK Driving Licence & a willingness to travel

The business is part of a larger group of companies with a group turnover in excess of c£10M. All businesses within the group have a focus on branding the built environment and offer a variety of products and services throughout the UK and overseas.

Focusing on this particular business within the group, when it was first set up approximately ten years ago; it started as a design, project management and brand implementation business. Initially using manufacturing supply chain partners, for all production requirements, they recently brought manufacturing in-house, to control quality and add to the bottom line.

Significant investment has been made. The factory has been kitted out with a variety of machinery including: CNC routers, brake press, guillotine, welding machines, wall saws and large format digital printers, giving them in house capability to produce metal work, acrylic, manufacture built up letters and produce vinyl and digitally printed graphics.

As the business has grown, they now require an experienced production manager / operations manager to champion the factory and the company’s manufacturing capability.

Details

As the Production Manager / Operations Manager you’ll hold overall responsibility for the entire management of the production and fabrication unit. You’ll report directly to the Managing Director and be responsible for the profitability of the factory.

Firstly, as the factory has grown and has lacked clear leadership, you’ll be required to review it’s current set up. Where needed you’ll devise and implement corrective measures, to include systems and processes as well as staff management.

The business needs to react to client demands, often with short lead times. You will be responsible for production scheduling and management of production flow. This can change quickly, and production schedules can be interrupted dependent on client needs. You’ll be able to adapt and deliver to the changing manufacturing requirements of the business.

As part of the production managers responsibilities you’ll manage the factory costs and efficiencies. Through organised production scheduling you’ll reduce overtime by working smart during less busy periods. Procurement and stock control, you’ll be negotiating with suppliers, contractors and managing the supply chain.

You’ll finally be responsible for Health and Safety, Staff recruitment and management, including appraisals, coaching, mentoring and disciplinary.
